RONO HILLS, Jan 30: The members of Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) on Wednesday observed two-minute silence in the memory of those who laid their lives in the struggle for India’s independence here near the ‘Wall of Heroes’ in the university premises.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor, Prof Saket Kushwaha, quoting from the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “The world has enough for everyone’s needs, but not everyone’s greed,” encouraged the students and youths of the country to contribute towards nation-building taking inspirations from the freedom fighters.
Prof SN Singh, senior professor of the department of History, said the day “reminds us about the ideals and values those martyrs lived for”. Prof Singh particularly remembered Mahatma Gandhi by reminding the participants of how Gandhi believed that revolutions can come peacefully too.
“There are misconception about Mahatma Gandhi in the minds of some people with regards to his relations with Subash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh,” professor Singh added. According to him, Gandhi could not save Bhagat Singh from going to the gallows because he was not a part of the British government. It was Subash Chandra Bose who himself gave Gandhi the tile of ‘Father of Nation’ he added.
Co-ordinator of the programme, Prof Nani Bath, highlighted the significance of the day and said that the nation needs to remember the jawans as well, who are not only guarding the territory of the country but are also defending the Constitution of India and the honour of the president of India.
He emphasized on the urgency of doing extensive research on the history of freedom movement in Arunachal Pradesh.
