LONGDING, Sep 15: The first leg of a 14-day familiarization exercise on disaster preparedness in Longding district began with a ‘school safety programme’ at the government higher secondary school here on Friday.
Aimed at creating awareness on disaster preparedness, mitigation and safety measures during and before natural and manmade disasters, the exercise is being conducted by the Doimukh (Papum Pare)-based 12th Bn NDRF in coordination with the Longding district disaster management authority.
The NDRF team demonstrated various search-and-rescue techniques using locally available resources like bamboo, empty water bottles, etc, for the benefit of the students, teachers and staff of the school.
District Disaster Management FO Vijay Mitte urged the students and teachers to “inculcate lifesaving know-how and basic survival tactics being imparted by the team of NDRF” and spread the knowledge to their friends and parents.
GHSS Principal Lutni Perme said the programme would be “beneficial for preventing loss of precious lives by reducing response time by the first responders.”
A similar programme was conducted on the same day at the government secondary school here.
The NDRF team will visit all the circle headquarters of the district – Longding, Pongchau, Wakka, Pumao and Kanubari – as part of the programme. (DIPRO)
