RONO HILLS, Oct 11: The 4th Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) Soccer League began at the university’s ground here on Friday.
In the opening match, defending champion, Bachelors in Physical Education department, defeated RGU Research Scholars’ Forum 4-0.
This annual event is jointly organized by the Officers’ Club RGU, the RGU Students’ Union, the RGU Research Scholars’ Forum, the RGU Teachers’ Association, the RGU Employees’ Association, and the Alumni Association RGU.
Eighteen teams from within the campus are participating in the soccer league, which will continue till 22 October.
Arunachal Pradesh Football Association secretary Kipa Ajay acknowledged the contribution of the university in promoting and popularizing football in the state.
Stating that events like the USL are vital for the development of sports in the state, he urged the organizers to continue holding the sporting activity in order to promote football in higher education institutes, as well.
Informing that the football federation is conducting a super league in the coming months, he urged the RGU students to take part in it.
Ajay assured the organizers to provide 10 footballs and a set of goal nets in the next edition of the USL.
Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh state unit president Yasi Nalo Sonam said such tournaments provide the youths a platform to show their talent.
