DIGBOI, Nov 11: A Remembrance Day ceremony was organised at the war cemetery here in Tinsukia district of Assam on 10 November to pay homage to the soldiers from India and abroad who laid down their lives during the Second World War.
The event is organised every year on the second Sunday of November, under the aegis of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). Traditionally, the event is jointly organised by troops of the Indian Army, along with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and the CWGC here.
The Dinjan military station’s general officer commanding laid a wreath at the cemetery, and enumerated the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers, including a large number of Indian soldiers, during WW II.
The troops of the Indian Army presented a guard of honour, while a pipe band played military tunes to pay homage to the martyrs.
A large gathering of military officials, members of the CWGC, and officers from the IOC, the Oil India Ltd, the Coal India Ltd, the Assam branch of the Indian Tea Association, and locals witnessed the event and paid tributes to the martyrs.
Some of the fiercest battles of the Second World War were fought during the Burmese campaign. During these battles, those who achieved martyrdom were cremated at the Digboi cemetery. The war cemetery has 200 graves, including that of 50 soldiers from India.
