ITANAGAR, Oct 12: Education Minister Honchun Ngandam, Urban Development Minister Nabam Rebia and Education Secretary B. Tayeng visited the NIT Jote and inspected the temporary accommodation provided to the students in the new campus on Thursday. There were no students in the new campus during the visit of ministers, according to an official release.
After interaction with the NIT officials, the in-charge Director of NIT was requested to look into the grievances of the students. Further, they were asked to appraise the matter to a visiting officer from MHRD, who is arriving in the Capital to assess the situation on Oct 13.
The administration of the NIT is under Gol and the State Govt has no direct role to play, except in case of law and order, the release added.
Citing the agitation launched by the NIT students, the release further said that 1st year course of the NIT was shifted from Yupia to the new campus at Jote as per the decision of the last meeting of the Board of Directors of the NIT for gradual shifting from temporary campus to the permanent. They proposed to arrange accommodation of the boys in the 2 academic buildings that have been completed. The girls were proposed to be accommodated in one staff quarter block. The shifting was done on 6th October 2017.
However, resentment started growing among the students due to in-complete infrastructures. Then came the demand for immediate posting of regular Director for looking after the administration of NIT. The situation took ugly turn on Tuesday (Oct 11) when the students left the new campus en- mass and gathered in the old campus at Yupia in protest.
