ITANAGAR, Oct 26: A breast cancer awareness programme was organized by the Indian Medical Association, Arunachal Pradesh Branch and State Cancer Society in collaboration with the Women’s Cell of Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar on Thursday.
October is observed as ‘Breast Cancer Month’ every year to create awareness.
Senior Radian Oncologist cum SPO and Member Secretary of State Cancer Society Arunachal Pradesh (SCSAP), Dr Shyam Tsering said that Breast Self Examination (BSE) if performed by all ladies above 20 years of age every month, one week after menstrual cycle can help in early diagnosis and confirmation, thereby prevent the catastrophic effect of breast cancer.
He also informed about the Chief Minister Free Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy available at TRIHMS, Naharlagun at an affordable price for poor patients of the state.
Retired Senior Onco-Surgeon and Laparascopic Surgeon, Dr Mari Basar shared his experiences as a surgeon about Breast Carcinoma, the ignorance of common people and the need to spread awareness about cancer.
Director of Medical Education, Dr R D Khrimey encouraged the organizers to conduct such programmes in near future, while Senior Manager, Human Resources, NHPC Pravesh Kumar assured of financial and logistic support for the cause.
Assistant Professor cum President, Women’s Cell, DNGC , Lilly Jomoh Riba emphasized on the importance of awareness about cancer and its early signs, which she realized from personal loss of her brother.
The event was attended by students and teachers from different colleges, including Himalayan University.
Earlier in the day, an essay competition on breast cancer was conducted and the winners were given away prizes.
