KHONSA, Nov 14: Tirap Deputy Commissioner PN Thungon on Tuesday gave away the Towang Lowangdong merit scholarships for academic excellence for the year 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 to 42 students belonging to Nocte community.
Cash awards along with merit certificates were given to the students, who stood first, second and third in Class-XII (both Arts & Science) and Class-X.
While distributing the certificates and cash awards to the meritorious students, the Deputy Commissioner informed that majority of the students, who bagged the awards, have been pursuing higher studies in different parts of the country due to which the cash amounts have been deposited in their respective bank accounts and the certificates given to their parents.
Towang Lowangdong Merit Scholarship was first instituted by Wanglin Lowangdong, MLA and Paramount Chief of Borduria to commemorate his father and co-founder of NBF (Namsang Borduria Fund) Late Towang Lowangdong, the then Ang of Borduria.
The scholarship was implemented in 2002 in order to inspire, encourage and to motivate Noctes students in the field of education and since 2002, a total amount of Rs. 9,52,500 have been awarded to 150 meritorious students.
In addition, NBF provides Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 20,000 as grants-in-aid to tribal students of Tirap district preparing for UPSC main examination and those who are appearing in the main examination and preparing for final interview respectively.
Annual grants are also given to Nocte College students for PG Courses and four years or above courses and graduate courses and three years courses @ Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 3,000 respectively every year. DIPRO
