ZIRO, Dec 6: ADC Nending Chatung stressed on the need to sensitize the common masses about the ill effects of tobacco consumption, during a district level coordination meeting of the Tobacco Control Cell held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here in Lower Subansiri district on Wednesday.
“The alarming rate of a death in every 40 seconds because of tobacco-related diseases is a serious health issue,” he said.
He informed that every block in the district will conduct awareness programmes involving traders, school teachers and PRI members for better enforcement of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
An enforcement team will also be formed, and a flying squad will monitor the activities, he said.
Superintendent of Police, Bomge Kamduk suggested displaying hoardings outside shops that sell tobacco products. He assured to extend all possible assistance from the Police Department in enforcing the COTPA, and appealed for cooperation from all agencies.
DMO Dr Tage Kano highlighted the ill effects of tobacco consumption, while NTCP SPO, Dr Biman Natung made a PowerPoint presentation on the COTPA and tobacco-consumption and health issues. (DIPRO)
