LONGDING, Dec 12: Security forces gunned down a hardcore NSCN (K) militant in Longding during an encounter on 11 December.
The encounter took place in Tissa village, where the militants hiding in a house opened fire on the security forces during search operation.
“One was killed in retaliatory fire,” informed Kohima-based Defence PRO, Col C Konwer.
The identity of the killed militant is yet to be determined. A Colt pistol, a radio set and other incriminating documents were recovered from him.
The search for the other militant, who managed to escape under cover of darkness and dense foliage, is in progress, Col Konwar said.
The Khonsa battalions of the Assam Rifles launched the operation in the afternoon of 11 December, based on intelligence that NSCN (K) cadres were carrying out extortion activities in Tissa village.
The Defence PRO said that killing of the militant has struck a major blow to the outfit and its illegal activities in the area.
The security forces under the DAO Division have been carrying out relentless operations to maintain peace and tranquillity in the region, defence sources said.
