Worang Juku festival celebrated
LAZU, Feb 13: Tirap Deputy Commissioner PN Thungon appealed to the youths of the district to do away with the drug menace.
Addressing the 6th Ollo Worang Juku festival celebration of the Ollo community here on Monday, the DC said the government and the local administration are bent on curbing the drug menace.
“Various line departments and the NERCOMP have been entrusted with the task of supplanting poppy with cash crops,” he informed.
The DC appealed to misguided youths to shun violence and return to the mainstream, and advised parents to get their children immunized during the ongoing measles-rubella vaccination campaign.
He instructed the education department to keep a strict vigil on the functioning of schools and the implementation of the midday meal scheme.
Taking note of lack of proper infrastructure in the festival ground, the DC announced Rs 3 lakh from his untied fund for construction of a multi-utility shed at the general ground.
Appealing to the Ollos to uphold and promote their cultural heritage, he said, “The new generation must continue the rich traditional rituals and culture of the community, as practiced by their ancestors since immemorial.”
ZPC Sontung Bangsia stressed on the need to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the tribe, and also emphasized on the need to educate and empower the girl children.
Organising committee secretary Yangsen Kongkang read out the festival’s mythology. Organising committee president Sethok Thiamloung and vice president Thokwang Ngonpadiong also spoke.
A legal awareness camp under the aegis of APSLSA was also conducted on the sideline of the festival. (DIPRO)
