ITANAGAR, Apr 10: The Youth Mission For Clear River – Arunachal Pradesh (YMFCR-AP) in a representation to the capital complex deputy commissioner on Tuesday urged him to initiate steps to check pollution of streams in the capital complex.
Seeking to draw the DC’s attention to the pollution of natural streams because of the ongoing construction of the four-lane highway between Naharlagun and Itanagar, the group urged him to take urgent steps to address the issue.
YMFCR-AP chairman SD Loda claimed that several natural streams are getting diverted because of the construction work.
‘The streams’ courses are being diverted as soil is dumped over the streams, due to which surface water is going underground and is slowly depleting,’ Loda said.
‘Moreover, rampant illegal earth-cutting is going on in various locations of the twin capital towns, which has caused mass destruction of natural forests and the catchment areas of the streams. Such illegal earth-cutting also causes mudslides and blockage of water courses, which lead to water-logging on the roads,’ he said.
The group also requested the DC to take steps to check encroachment on the ‘left-out portion of the existing highway’ and issue a prohibitory order against dumping of construction materials on either side of the roads.
