AICTE member takes stock of NERIST’s issues

NIRJULI, May 17: Member of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Tana Nikam Tara recently visited the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology (NERIST) here and interacted with the faculty members and the new director of the institute.
Following the recent imbroglio at the institute, Tara was assigned by the AICTE to visit the NERIST and gather firsthand information regarding the problems affecting it.
NERIST Director Prof HS Yadav highlighted the key issues needing to be addressed by the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) for smooth functioning of the institute.
“The MHRD should extend every possible support for completion of all the ongoing infrastructural projects at the institute. The NERIST has very low internal revenue generation; hence capital funding for infrastructure has to be continued as earlier and the institute has to be kept out of the Higher Education Funding Agency. The NERIST is especially designed for the NE region and it cannot be treated as any other institute,” Prof Yadav said.
Officials of the NERIST urged the NITI Aayog to make specific plans for the growth of the institute. Prof Pradeep Lingfa and other HoDs also spoke regarding the present situation at the NERIST and shared ideas for the growth of the institute.
Tara on his part assured to take up the issues placed by them with the AICTE chairman and the MHRD. He urged everyone, especially the locals, to preserve and protect institutes like the NERIST and the NIT.
“These two premier technical institutes of the state are functioning for the benefit of the state and the nation. It is the duty of every citizen to extend cooperation for smooth functioning of the NERIST and the NIT,” said Tara.
