Arunachal is protected; no need to worry about Citizenship Bill: Pema

ITANAGAR, May 23: Chief Minister Pema Khandu said that Arunachal Pradesh does not have to worry about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 as the state is protected by the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873.
“Since Arunachal is protected under the BERF 1873, which does not allow even Indian citizens to enter the state without an inner line permit, Arunachal does not need to worry about the issue”, Pema said on the sideline of an event at Jollang on Wednesday.
He said that it is not a concern for Arunachal as the state cabinet had already made it clear in the assembly that it rejects the citizenship of Chakmas and Hajongs.
On the strong reactions from the governments of Assam and Meghalaya against the bill, Pema said that “the states have their own problems and since they are not protected by such acts, there must be some concerns”.
