LONGDING, Sep 1: An open chess tournament was conducted by the sports department under the aegis of the Longding district administration here on Saturday.
Honjing Wangpan of Longshom village, who works in the office of the deputy commissioner, became the champion while Lojoon Nalo, who is a teacher at the Pongchau GHSS, finished runner-up.
The winner and the runner-up were awarded cash prizes of Rs 21,000 and Rs 11,000, respectively.
Deputy Commissioner VS Mallik, who witnessed the games, said: “Chess is a game of two minds that enhances the analytical skills, which come in handy even in real life situations.”
District Sports Officer Ahua Wangsu urged the players to promote the game in their areas, stating that it is “a game of mental war in nature that requires higher level of concentration.”
