DIRAK MIRI, Sep 3: World Coconut Day was celebrated in Namsai district for the first time by the district horticulture office in Dirak Miri village with villagers and coconut cultivators from Dirak Miri, Rangolibeel and Dharampur on 2 September.
Chongkham HDO MH Choudhury spoke on the packages and practices of coconut and other fruits that could be taken up to minimize wastage of land and double farmers’ income.
The resource person from the agriculture department spoke about other crops which could be taken up simultaneously with coconuts to enhance income during the gestation period of coconuts.
The Namsai HDO presented the products and byproducts that could be prepared out of total coconut, including coconut leaves.
The resource person from the Namsai KVK and the agriculture deputy director encouraged farmers to grow more coconuts, and gave tips on how to take care of their plantations.
Officials and beneficiaries of new coconut plantations also took a tour of the plot of one Hornath Sungkurang of Dirik Miri village.
