Suicide in police custody

ROING, Oct 30: A person committed suicide inside his cell minutes after he was arrested by the police and locked up at the police station here on Tuesday.
Maklung Lego alias Jing Lego (28), who was reportedly a habitual offender and a drug addict, was caught from the house he was attempting to burgle into at Mayu village early in the morning.
“The police brought the burglar to the police station here at around 6:10 am and locked him up in the cell, pending follow-up action. But when the sentry left the cell area for the shift change, he was found hanging by the neck around 6:20 am,” informed investigating officer (IO) Padi Nikang.
“He was then rushed to the district hospital for examination, where he was declared brought dead at around 6:35 am,” Nikang said.
According to the police, Lego had a couple of cases registered against him, and also had a non-bailable warrant against him.
“He had been absconding since the last three to four years, and we were on a constant lookout for him,” said the IO.
“Lego had also made a failed suicide attempt after he was had been arrested by the police on an earlier occasion,” it was informed.
Postmortem was conducted at the district hospital and the results are awaited. The body has been handed over to the family.
Meanwhile, the police have intimated the CJM and the Lower Dibang Valley deputy commissioner for a magisterial inquiry into the case, as also the National Human Rights Commission, Delhi.
