ITANAGAR, Nov 27: Itanagar Police arrested one Biri Tapa, headmaster of the Niti Vihar government middle school, on 18 November for alleged sexual assault on a 14-year-old student.
An FIR has been registered against Tapa under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Capital SP M Harsha Vardhan informed that, following the circulation of a video on WhatsApp, in which the girl is seen narrating the incident of sexual assault on her by the teacher, the police traced her.
Later, her statement was recorded and an FIR lodged against the teacher.
The SP said some members of the school management committee were aware of the incident but the matter was not reported to the police.
“They should’ve immediately reported to the police, as is required,” Vardhan said.
The schoolgirl has meanwhile been counselled by counsellors from Childline Itanagar.
Chairperson Kani Maling Nada of the Child Welfare Committee, Itanagar, said she has spoken to the state legal services authority regarding providing free legal aid to the survivor of the alleged sexual assault.
