DAPORIJO, Dec 10: Hundreds of farmers from all over the district attended a ‘Gaon chalo awareness-cum-pre Rabi programme’ organised by the Upper Subansiri District Farmers’ Society (USDFS) in collaboration with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Singhik Hall here on 8 December.
The programme was aimed at encouraging the people from remote villages to not migrate to district headquarters Daporijo but create self-employment opportunities in the villages by engaging in farming activities.
DC Danish Ashraf advised the farmers to engage in cultivation for self-employment, and urged them to benefit from the soil health card scheme. He told the farmers to discuss suitable schemes for agriculture and allied activities during gram panchayat meetings.
KVK Head Nyape (Tomi) Bam urged the farmers to “change from subsistence farming to commercial farming” with the help of the KVK, and told them about the ill effects of inorganic chemicals on humans as well as on the soil.
Agronomy scientist Arvind Pratap urged the people to “create a signature crop for the district by taking advantage of its diverse climate.” Taksing circle, he said, is ideal for off-season crops.
USDFS general secretary Totok Leriak Tamin and its chairman Porsu Tamin also spoke.
