LAZU, Dec 16: A monitoring team of the horticulture department, comprising JDH (Temperate Zone) Narang Tani, HDO Daniel Nabam and Tirap DHO Henrik Basar, visited the horticulture fields in Lazu circle of Tirap district on Sunday.
The horticulture scheme was implemented in Lazu circle this year as an alternative to opium cultivation, with the aim of eradicating the opium culture from the area.
During the inspection, the team interacted with the beneficiaries and advised them not to cultivate opium again. Highlighting the ill effects of opium consumption, and the laws against opium cultivation and sale, the team encouraged the farmers to take up horticulture activities on a large scale to benefit economically.
The beneficiaries of the scheme expressed satisfaction over having replaced opium with horticulture. (DIPRO)
