Arunachal opens account with two bronze medals

PUNE, Jan 9: Arunachal won two bronze medals in weightlifting on the first day of the Khelo India Youth Games 2018-19 here at Pune in Maharashtra on Wednesday.
First bronze medal for Arunachal was won by state’s budding lifting star, Sandiya Gungli in the girls’ 40kg category under-17 age group. Gugli lifted a total of 95kg (Snatch-41kg; Clean & Jerk-54kg)
Prior to this achievement, Gungli won a bronze medal in the 14th Youth National Weightlifting Championship held at Nagpur in December last year.
The second bronze medal of the day was won by Golom Tinku in 55 kg boys’ category under-17. Tinku lifted a total of 201kg (Snatch-89; Clean & Jerk-112).
The technical officials of Khelo India, particularly secretary general of the Indian Weightlifting Federation was highly impressed with the performance of Tinku as he was the youngest among all the competitors in the under-17 age group.
Meanwhile, another medal prospect weightlifter, Tami Tame and Chera Tania could not continue their participation in the 49 kg under-17 category due to injuries.
The remaining sports disciplines for Arunachal team, like athletic, badminton, judo and wrestling events will begin from Thursday. Boxing and archery events will begin from 13 and 16 January respectively.
The Khelo India Games is now bigger and better in its second edition after being re-christened the Khelo India Youth Games, covering 18 different disciplines in different age groups.
