WAKRO, Jan 30: Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) Chairperson, Radhilu Chai Techi has appealed to the Mishmi community, especially CALSOM, AMWWS, AMSU etc to bring about reformation in the Mishmi marriage system to stop the practice of polygamy.
She said this while addressing a one-day legal awareness programme jointly organized by the APSCW, district administration and Wakro unit of the All Mishmi Women’s Welfare Society (AMWWS) at the community hall, here in Lohit district on Tuesday.
The APSCW chairperson also spoke about the POCSO Act 2012, Domestic Violence (prevention) Act, etc.
APSCW Member Secretary, Yame Higio in her address informed that the APSCW team is undertaking tour to various locations of the state to create awareness among the women for their rights under various sections of laws.
Tezu DLSA advocate, Kumar Dorjee informed that it has become compulsory to register marriage under registration of Marriage Act to ensure proper documentation of marriages.
He further informed that there is a marriage officer in every district.
He also spoke on legal and Maternity Benefits Act, 1961 and property rights of women and right of women to livelihood.
Wakro EAC, Horki Diyum urged parents to educate the girl child at par with male children so that they can become self-reliant.
Wakro AMWWS unit president, Bihem Lap Dellang also spoke on the occasion.
