IJU condemns attacks on journalists in Assam

HYDERABAD, Apr 27: The Indian Journalists’ Union (IJU) has condemned the attacks on two journalists, including a woman, in Nalbari and Tinsukia districts of Assam on 26 April.
Dainik Asom correspondent Rajen Deka was reportedly assaulted with sharp weapons on Thursday night by BJP activist Ripul Deka alias Baba in Tegheriattari village in Nalbari. He sustained serious injuries on his head, chest, wrist and arms, and is currently undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital.
An FIR has been lodged against Ripul Deka and one Jintu Medhi in connection with the case.
The IJU also condemned the assault on Tinsukia-based television journalist Upasana Barua Goswami by a group of four miscreants in a restaurant. All four, iden-tified as Pramod Gogoi, Pragjyoti Das, Dhananjay Dutta and Dwipan Sonowal, have been arrested.
The IJU and its affiliate in Assam, the Journalists’ Union of Assam, condemned the heinous attacks on the journalists for carrying out their duties.
The IJU has urged the Assam government to speed up the investigations and give exemplary punishment to the culprits.
In a statement, IJU President Amar Devulapally and Secretary-General Sabina Inderjit asked the Assam government to ensure safety of the lives of journalists and create a free and fearless media environment in the state.
