NAMSAI, 16 Mar: The second edition of the U-16 boys’ and girls’ Khelo India tournaments began in the presence of a huge gathering at the general ground here on Monday.
The tournament, comprising five disciplines – volleyball, badminton, athletics, table tennis and cycling – is being organized by the sports department in collaboration with the Namsai district administration.
Declaring the tournament open, MLA Chau Zingnu Namchoom advised the youths to stay away from drugs and other harmful substances. He encouraged the youths to divert their energy towards constructive purposes.
He also highlighted various flagship programmes of both the central and state governments for youth empowerment.
Namsai DC RK Sharma, who was also present, said: “We should not only play but also inspire others to play.” He assured of his full support for uplifting sports activities in the district.
Earlier, Namsai DSO (Sports) R Mihu briefed the gathering on the aims and objectives of the Khelo India programme.
Nearly 400 students (both boys and girls) are participating in various disciplines in the tournament.
