PASIGHAT, 16 Jul: The scientists at the College of Horticulture & Forestry (CHF) here in East Siang district have said that onion can be grown twice a year in the hill slopes and plain areas of Arunachal.

Vegetable Science Associate Professor Dr Chandra Deo said that improved varieties of onions like ‘Bhima super’ and ‘Bhima dark-red’ can be cultivated by the farmers as both Kharif and Rabi crops.

Dr Deo, who imparted training on scientific cultivation of onion to a group of 20 farmers from Riga village in Siang district at the KVK here, encouraged them to take up onion cultivation as the hilly terrains and plain areas of the state are suitable for the crop.

He trained the farmers on how to prepare nursery beds to raise seedlings from seeds and plant them.

The organizers also distributed improved variety of onion seeds and greenhouse nets for preparing nursery beds. The scientist also held an interaction session with the farmers.

Earlier, CHF Dean Dr BN Hazarika inaugurated the training programme and encouraged the farmers to take up vegetable and spices cultivation to make Arunachal a self-sufficient state in such products.
