BOMDILA, 10 Feb: The West Kameng district & sessions judge, who is also the special judge of the POCSO court, has sentenced one Bhawani Chetry to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) under Section 6 of the POCSO Act and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.
Judge Tageng Padoh in his verdict on Thursday also awarded the accused a sentence of one year’s simple imprisonment for his offence under Section 506 IPC, along with a fine of Rs 2,000. The sentences shall go concurrently.
The convict, identified as Bhawani Chetry (35), of Balijuri village in Assam, had raped his stepdaughter, a minor schoolgirl, on three occasions.
Chetry had been arrested on 4 April, 2021 after the victim had lodged a written complaint, alleging that her stepfather had sexually exploited her several times despite her protests.
