Step up security

Thieves reportedly stole around 150 metres of newly installed copper catenary wire on the night of 5-6 June. The theft occurred between Naharlagun and Gumto railway stations, impacting ongoing efforts to electrify the Harmuti-Naharlagun railway line. It has also delayed plans to launch the much-anticipated Rajdhani service between Naharlagun and Delhi, holding up the trial runs.

Senior officials visited the site to assess the damage. Railway authorities confirmed that the missing wire is crucial to the electrification project, which has now been delayed.

Authorities are investigating the theft and have urged the public to come forward with any information. Clearly, the thieves showed little concern for the consequences of stealing such a vital component. This isn’t just copper theft – it’s the disruption of a public service and a setback to an ambitious electrification initiative.

For now, the security apparatus – including CCTV installation – must be strengthened to prevent             further disruption to this key train link.
