BOLENG, 12 Aug: A team of the Jering Matkir Society (JMS) on Sunday met Siang Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu here and discussed various social issues, including rising drug menace.
The team proposed organizing awareness-cum-counselling programmes on contraband drugs at all the government higher secondary schools in Siang district, in collaboration with the district administration.
The team also discussed the adverse effects of chemical roundup weedicide and urged the DC to ban its use in the district to encourage organic farming.
The JMS’ Boleng block president Tani Jerang highlighted the issue of mithun disturbances in horti- agro-based farming in the district, and suggested that the DC implement a strong policy to control mithun disturbances.
Senior member and renowned progressive farmer Taloko Darang suggested that the DC give emphasis on orange farming to make the district an orange hub.
Responding to the JMS team members, the DC accepted the proposal to collaborate on the proposed awareness programme on drug issues, and assured to look into other issues. The DC sought the society’s cooperation for the development of the district.
The team members included officials and senior members, including women’s wing leaders from Pangin, Kebang, Boleng, Rumgong blocks of the society.
