NHPC’s work ethics

The NHPC Limited is being accused of irresponsible work ethics in the ongoing construction of the 2,880 mw Dibang Multipurpose Project in Lower Dibang Valley district. Environmental activist Rakhini Mipi has alleged gross violations of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980; the Forest Rights Act, 2006; and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 by the NHPC Ltd during the construction of tunnels and approach roads. He has also cited reckless dumping of muck into the Dibang river as a major concern, stating that environmental laws are being blatantly violated.

Accusing the NHPC of ignoring the issues raised, Mipi has sought the intervention of the National Green Tribunal.

The NHPC has allegedly felled trees recklessly and has been irresponsible in the disposal of plastic and blasting wastes, as well as in dumping muck into the river. Reports also mention the presence of unattended explosive materials at the site.

The NHPC must ensure that its work is carried out in accordance with established environmental regulations. Dumping waste indiscriminately along the way is not acceptable. The consequences of such reckless behaviour could lead to further environmental degradation in an area already under stress due to the construction of this mega power project.

The project not only restricts the natural flow of the river but also causes significant harm to the surrounding ecology. The relevant regulatory authorities must fulfil their responsibilities and not turn a blind eye to these violations.
