NAMSAI, 18 Sep: On Wednesday evening, as she entered his office to discuss her below-standard performance in the examination with her assistant professor, little did she know what was waiting for her.
Assistant Professor Prosenjit Das of the Arunachal University of Studies (AUS) here molested a female student in his room on Wednesday evening after inviting her to his room on the pretext of helping her prepare for a practical exam. Das, who is in judicial custody now, forcibly tried to grope and kiss the victim. The victim had performed below standard in her previous exam and had gone to his room, hoping he would help her. Instead, he molested her and promised to pass her in the exam even if she didn’tperform properly.
The shocked victim somehow managed to flee and later informed the local youths about the incident. Das was arrested on Thursday early morning. “Local youths helped us to arrest him. Das was arrested early morning on Thursday from his rented accommodation. He has been sent to judicial custody,” informed Namsai PS OC AK Pandey.
The Tai Khamti Youth Organisation (TKYO), on receiving the complaint from the victim, traced the accused and helped the police in nabbing him. An FIR has also been lodged in this regard.
On Thursday, a TKYO team, led by its president Chau Sengkhun Manchey, visited the AUS and formally submitted a sexual harassment complaint against the accused. The organisation also issued a stern warning to the institute that if the victim’s academic career is disturbed or manipulated in any way due to her complaint, the TKYO would be compelled to take strict action against the institution.
The TKYO informed the media that the AUS authority has assured it that the accused would be expelled from the institute, and further assured that the student’s academic career would remain protected.
