TEZU, 17 Nov: The APLA@50 Outreach Connectprogramme, conducted as part of the golden jubilee celebration of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (APLA), concluded at Indira Gandhi Government College (IGGC) here in Lohit district on 15 November.

Organised by the APLA in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), and coordinated by RGU’s Centre for Distance and Online Education(CDOE), the event marked yet another significant milestone in strengthening democratic awareness among students across the state.

The day began with an engaging debate competition, during which the participants showcased keen analytical skills and deep understanding of constitutional and governance-related themes.

During the main event, IGGC Principal Dr Kangi Megu expressed appreciation for the APLA and RGU for bringing the initiative to the college, noting its importance in bridging governance and higher education.

RGU CDOE Assistant Professor Dr Saurav Mitraprovided an overview of the objectives and achievements of the APLA@50 Outreach Connect. He highlighted how the programme has travelled across more than 20 higher education institutions in Arunachal Pradesh, nurturing civic responsibility, constitutional literacy, and informed engagement among the youths.

APLA Deputy Secretary Longman Ronrangexplained the functioning of the state legislature, and spoke on the roles, powers, and functions of the Assembly, historical legislations that shaped the state’s governance, and the conduct of legislative proceedings. He also outlined the responsibilities of the speaker, ministers and MLAs, elaborated the budgeting process, and highlighted the crucial role of the opposition in ensuring accountability.

RGU History Professor Prof Ashan Riddi in his keynote speech traced the evolution of Arunachal’s political identity, from traditional tribal governance to modern democratic structures. He explained the significance of fundamental rights and duties, emphasising that responsibilities and rights go hand in hand in preserving national unity and societal harmony.

The programme concluded with the prize distribution ceremony, where the best performers in the debate competition were felicitated. (Speaker’s PR Cell)
