ITANAGAR, 14 May: The 18th general conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), India Region, Zone-III, hosted by the Arunachal Pradesh legislative assembly, saw two definite messages for the central government and a thank you to the union for the attention given to the region.
The event, which saw the participation of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, and all the speakers of the legislative assemblies of the northeastern states, called for the government of India to adopt differentiated and targeted guidelines under the centrally sponsored schemes, including incorporation of cost disability index for the Northeast region.
Another resolution called for creation of a separate state-specific cadre for the states of Arunachal and Mizoram, or in the alternative, for ensuring long-term and stable tenures for All India Service officers posted in these states.
All three suggestions were offered by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and were unanimously adopted by the conference.
“The states of the region have different topography with cultural diversity, for which state-specific policies are needed to be framed,” he said.
The policies of the Centre are difficult to implement on the ground as the region has unique challenges in comparison to the other parts of the country, Khandu said.
