ROING, 8 Jul: The anti-drug squad (ADS) of the police here in Lower Dibang Valley (LDV) district arrested four persons, including a major drug peddler, on Friday, taking the total number of arrested drug users/peddlers to nine in five days in a row.
According to the police, the ADS team, led by DSP Ringu Ngupok, apprehended one Raman Umpo, who is a major drug peddler, along with three others, identified as Tuluku Pulu, Eenga Mega and Porbir Das, from near Sally Lake here.
“As per information received from a reliable source, at around 1745 hrs, our ADS team rushed to the spot but couldn’t locate them. Later, after two hours of continuous tracking, we were able to locate Umpo. He was caught red-handed selling heroin at the highway side two kms north from Roing town. Immediately, the ADS team nabbed him and three others for selling/consuming suspected heroin. The magistrate was also informed and, after his arrival, we began the search operation,” informed the police.
Reportedly, the ADS confiscated six containers with suspected heroin, weighing around 10 grams, Rs 63,660 in cash (probably sale proceeds), four mobile phones, one syringe, eight cigarette packets and six lighters from their possession.
“We were combing for these antisocial elements since 3 July and it is the fifth consecutive case on the fifth day against drug peddlers/consumers in the district. After this arrest, almost 90-95 percent of the main peddlers active in Lower Dibang Valley district have been put behind bars and the supply chain from outside has also been cut off,” the police informed.
LDV SP JK Lego said, “There will be zero tolerance towards those who indulge in drug peddling activities. ADS Roing has committed to take legal actions against those involved in such evil activities till the last peddler gets arrested from our district.
“All the persons involved in drugs peddling and consumption activities are requested to come up and live a good life, else legal action is the ultimate option,” he said.
“District police Lower Dibang Valley in general and ADS in particular are appealing to all the CBOs, PRIs, NGOs, villagers and general public to come in fighting against this menace at least by sharing information discreetly or report it openly wherever visible such evil practices. Anyone can share any input to ADS Roing headed by the DSP as they are working on the ground 24/7,” Lego said.
