ITANAGAR, 18 Sep: Biri Takar of Arunachal Pradesh created history by becoming the first para badminton player from the Northeast to win a medal at the BWF tournament.
Biri takar won a silver medal after losing 12-20, 20-22 to compatriot Naveen Shivakumar in the men’s singles final of the BWF Uganda Para Badminton Internationals-2022 in the SL4 category on Sunday.
Takar described his win as a big achievement and a momentous occasion for the state.
“This is a big achievement and a moment of joy for the entire Arunachal Pradesh,” an elated Takar said in a message from Uganda.
“…2 years of full-time training at Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy. I have sacrificed everything (for badminton). My mother would be so proud now,” he wrote in the message.
Takar underwent two years’ full-time training at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad before participating in the event.
Meanwhile, the high commission of India in Uganda felicitated Takar and all other Indian medal winners on Sunday.
Takar had reached the pre-quarterfinals in the BWF Spanish Para-Badminton International, which was held in March this year.
He is the first para-athlete from the Northeast to represent India in an international badminton event.
