LONGDING, 22 Mar: Thirty members of different women SHGs participated in an awareness programme on nutritional importance of millets, organised by the Longding KVK at Luaksim village on Friday.
During the programme, KVK Chief Technical Officer A Kirankumar Singh elaborated the importance of millet, its nutritional value and commercial importance.
Singh also apprised the women of different recipes that can be made with millets for household consumption and commercial production of millets.
“The cultivation practices are almost the same as practiced by the farmers earlier, but the methods have to be changed, keeping in mind the maintenance of spacing, sowing method and sowing time,” Singh told the participants, and added that “by maintaining proper spacing, the seed requirement will be reduced and the development will be satisfactory, as there will be no competition among the plants for nutrients and moisture.”
During interaction, the women informed that the main reason for their leaving millets cultivation is threshing, which, they said, is time-consuming and cumbersome.
