LIKABALI, 27 Aug: Boys’ and girls’ teams from across Lower Siang district are participating in a district-level U-17 sports meet which got underway at the Chidu-Chigo ground here on Tuesday.
Addressing the inaugural programme, Galo Youth Organisation president Bomkar Gara emphasised the importance of promoting games and sports for the all-round development of children in schools.
“Sports can lead to physical fitness and employment opportunities,” he said, and commended the district administration for organising the football tournament.
All Lower Siang District Students’ Union president Tom Taju advised the participating teams to “embody the true spirit of sportsmanship,” and said that “the trophy carries dust, but memories last forever.”
Taju also cautioned the students against the influence of drugs.
District sports coordinator Monya Dini informed that this is the second edition of the event, aimed at “providing a platform to discover budding sports talent and promote them in state and national arenas.”
Government higher secondary school (GHSS) Likabali won the inaugural football match against government secondary school (GSS) Lipu with 4-2 goals in a penalty shootout in the boys’ category.
In the girls’ category, GHSS Likabali beat GSS Liru 1-0.
