NEW DELHI, 1 Aug: Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bosiram Siram called on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge here on Friday, and the two discussed ways to strengthen the Indian National Congress at the grassroots level in Arunachal, as well as to find ways to revive the party’s mass connect and public outreach.
Siram submitted a comprehensive memorandum to the Congress president, focusing on three major issues of critical importance for the people of Arunachal.
The memorandum read that Article 371(H) of the Indian Constitution should be modified and brought at par with Article 371(A) of Nagaland and Article 371(G) of Mizoram to grant constitutional safeguards and legislative rights to the people of Arunachal over their land, natural resources, customary laws, and socio-cultural practices.
Siram also raised the issue of the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), expressing deep concern over the potential socio-cultural, environmental, and demographic impacts of the proposed SUMP, especially displacement and livelihood threats to the indigenous tribal communities.
He called for a reevaluation of the project with meaningful consultation with local stakeholders.
Siram also sought restoration of the old pension scheme (OPS), saying that the national pension scheme (NPS) is market-linked and uncertain.
Restoration of the OPS would ensure social and financial security for government employees after retirement, he stated in the memorandum.
Kharge expressed appreciation for Siram’s dedication, and gave assurance that the Congress party stands with the people of the Arunachal and would continue to champion their rights and aspirations.
