LIKABALI, 3 Oct: The Lower Siang district unit of the Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) celebrated its second foundation day here on 30 September.

Deputy Commissioner Rujjum Rakshap, who attended the programme, expressed hope that the APLS would promote reading and writing habits among the people “and thereby immensely enrich the literature of the area.”

He urged the APLS to “encourage the common man to write their feelings and expose their literary talents in their own local dialects and get them translated in English or Hindi.”

He also suggested that the APLS frame a calendar of events and chalk out activities to be undertaken by it.

“Anyone writing something reflects the society as a whole, thereby contributing to the further enrichment of literature of the society. Someone has to lead and carry the torch and be pioneers in the field for documenting the pace of vulnerable trend of socio-cultural transition and dynamism of the society,” he said.

He also expressed regret over his inability to provide the APLS district unit with an office room, even after two years in office.

APLS president Dr YD Thongchi congratulated the district unit, and informed that the APLS was formed in 2006 to provide a platform for the budding literary prodigies of the state. He commended the proactive roles played by the district unit despite all odds.

Senior public leader Gumke Riba expressed appreciation for the APLS unit, and said that “the day should be aptly etched in the literary history of the district to remind the enormous awareness it has been able to create in the minds of the people towards importance of literature.”

APLS district unit president HR Bado urged the youths to pursue literary activities along with games, sports and cultural activities for balanced growth. “Literature is something that has carried forward the civilization, and without it we would lose our past,” he said, and appealed to parents to encourage budding writers and poets to pursue their works seriously.

Earlier, APLS unit general secretary Rickar Taipodiapresented the annual activity report of the society.

On the occasion, a book titled Liiluk-Gargok – an anthology by the district unit of the APLS – was released by the DC.

Prizes for the various literary competitions conducted this year were also given away to the winners. (DIPRO)
