DIRANG, 12 Feb: The National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY) here in West Kameng district completed a skill development programme titled ‘Short course training programme on scientific techniques of yak handling and management’ for ITBP personnel on Thursday.
A total of seven ITBP personnel from the 4th, 55th and 59th Battalions of the Indo-Tibetan Boarder Police (ITBP) participated in the programme, which was aimed at making the ITBP personnel skilled in scientific knowledge of handling and management of yaks.
Earlier, NRCY Director Dr Mihir Sarkar stressed the importance of yaks in securing the trans-boundary areas of Nepal, China, Pakistan and Bhutan, and dwelt on the direct importance of yaks in load carrying in the hilly terrains of highland areas.
4th Bn ITBP Commandant (Veterinary) Dr LG Singh highlighted the importance of the training for ITBP personnel who are involved in border security in association with yaks and the Brokpa community, while course director Dr D Medhi along with coordinator Dr Mokhtar Hussain, Dr Vijay Paul and Dr Mansukh Singh Jatana prepared the course to cover all aspects of yak handling and management in scientific ways.
The programme featured theory and practical classes. It covered all aspects of breeding, feeding and housing management for yaks and their health coverage.
“Besides, the trainees were extensively involved in learning practical aspects of pack ability in yaks in hilly terrains with value addition of yak-based products, using yak milk and hairs,” the NRCY informed in a release.
