POBDI, Jul 2: Saying that disputes over land and dragging developmental issues to court hamper the government’s initiatives, Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Tumke Bagra appealed to the people to refrain from such practices.
Inaugurating the Hokkir Ete Memorial T20 Cricket Tournament at the secondary school ground here in West Siang district on Monday, Bagra said funds for several schemes and projects of community interest have been provided by the government.
“But it is up to the executing and local contractors that the schemes and projects are carried out meticulously,” he said.
Bagra advised the players to take up sports professionally, saying there are job reservations for meritorious sportspersons in all government departments.
The deputy speaker, along with the DDSE and others, also inspected the secondary school.
The tournament’s sponsor, Henkar Ete, spoke on the life and role of her mother, in whose memory the tournament is being organized.
Bango secretary Karge Ete, former ZPM Tumpe Ete, organising chairman Jomgum Ete, and Paktu Ete Bango Students’ Union (PEBSU) president Marken Kamnyi and secretary Jumli Ete apprised the deputy speaker of the poor condition of the school.
Fifty-one teams from different parts of the district are participating in the tournament, which is being organized by the PEBSU.
Earlier, a minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect to late Hokkir Ete. (DIPRO)
