LAZU, Jul 9: Tirap District Horticulture Officer (DHO) Henrik Basar urged the opium cultivators of Lazu and Sinnu villages to discard their poppy cultivation and take up cultivation of horticulture crops for sustainable livelihood.
He was addressing farmers during a training programme on major horticulture crops, conducted especially for opium cultivators, here on Monday.
Highlighting the importance of imparting training on major horticulture crops to provide alternative livelihood to the opium growers, the DHO enumerated the ill effects of opium, and also urged the farmers to avoid use of chemical insecticides.
Lazu EAC (in-charge) DK Thungdok also urged the farming community of both the villages to shun poppy cultivation and adopt horticulture crops.
Resource persons from the horticulture department imparted training on organic cultivation practice of large ginger, king chilly and large cardamom. (DIPRO)
