TENGAPANI, Feb 19: The Theravada Buddhist community of Namsai district celebrated Mai-Ko-Sumfai festival with religious fervour and traditional gaiety on Tuesday.
Deputy CM Chowna Mein, accompanied by state BJP president Tapir Gao, Namsai MLA Zingnu Namchoom, DC Tapashya Ragav and SP Ankit Singh took part in the ritual at Kongmukham here in Namsai district on Tuesday morning.
Arunachal University of Studies professor, Ven Pragyasila Bhikkhu, highlighted the importance of celebration of Mai-Ko-Sumfai.
“It is a ritual ceremony held on the full moon day of Magha, connected with the offering of fire,” he said.
As part of the ritual, a stupa-like structure is made up of stacks of firewood. The entire stack of firewood is then offered to the Buddha. (DCMO)
