ITANAGAR, Jul 18: As part of the celebration of the National Reading Month (19 June to 18 July), the public libraries department conducted a book review competition among school children at the state central library here on Wednesday.
The month-long nationwide programme, initiated by the NITI Aayog in collaboration with the institutions concerned at the state level, aimed to inculcate in the citizens the habit of reading.
Forty-six students from five schools of the capital complex took part in the competition held here.
Earlier, a demonstration on how to properly look for a book in the correct section of the library, and the proper way to review it, was presented.
Attending the event, Rajiv Gandhi University’s Botany Professor, Dr Sumpam Tangjang, said “the youths of the state are in a vulnerable position without the knowledge imparted by active and lasting reading. The recent CBSE results are proof to that.”
He stressed on the importance of reading in “building a strong foundation of a child and fostering an innate cultural development within.” He also commended the state central library for the initiative to promote the reading culture in the state.
Public Libraries Undersecretary Mabi Taipodia Jini, who spoke about the “intrusive nature of social media,” urged the students to spend some time every day to read a book for pleasure.
Later, Public Libraries Director Jotom Borang and other officers presented the awards to the winners of the competition.
Raj Nalo and Phurbi Dolma Nago of the government middle school, Niti Vihar, won the first and second prize, respectively, followed by Mariya Singkom of government middle school, C-Sector (third), Tania Tayo of government secondary school, P-Sector (fourth), and Jumon Borah of government middle school, C-Sector (fifth).
