GUWAHATI, Mar 15: In a rare honour to the endangered languages of Northeast India and the world as a whole, a Bishnupriya Manipuri poem written by renowned poet Dils Lakshmindra Sinha from Assam was recited on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the launch of the International Mother Language Day in the Portcullis House of the house of commons of the British parliament on 13 March.
The popular poem in Bishnupriya Manipuri, titled Imathar (Mother Tongue), by Sinha was recited by Leina Zarina via video recording.
Altogether 17 poems in Indian languages, including Assamese, were recited, and the endangered Bishnupriya Manipuri language was among those highlighted during the literary event.
The programme, themed ‘Rich linguistic diversity of India’, was hosted by MP Bob Blackman and organized by the Sanskruti Centre for Cultural Excellence.
