ITANAGAR, 18: A villager identified as Wangnon Wangpasam was reportedly shot dead by NSCN-(IM) cadres at Chopnu village under Kanubhari on Tuesday, informed police.
Police sources said that the incident occurred around 3:30 PM, when the victim protested against the alleged molestation attempt by the cadres on his sister. After informing of the alleged molestation by his sister, Wangpasam brought the matter to the NSCN (IM) Commandant, who was among the six cadres.
When the commandant refused to entertain his pleas, late Wangpasam threatened the NSCN (IM) cadres that he would report the matter to the police and the army. Consequently, this angered one of the cadres and prompted him to shoot late Wangpasam at point blank range, police added.
Sources further added that late Wangpasam died on spot and the cadres immediately fled from the scene. The shooter has reportedly been identified as Kapwang Wangsu.
The news of Wangpasam’s death while trying to defend his sister from NSCN (IM) cadres has angered civil societies and students’ organisations.
Condemning the incident, the Longding District Students Union (LDSU) demanded for stringent action against the culprits involved in the heinous crime. In a statement, the LDSU stated that such barbaric act needs strong condemnation from across the society.
It also threatened to launch democratic movement, if the perpetrators are not booked at the earliest.
