DIRANG, Jan 23: The ICAR-National Research Centre (ICAR-NRC) on Yak here in West Kameng district celebrated its 29th foundation day on Tuesday.
Established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1989, the ICAR-NRC is the only institute in the country for carrying out research exclusively on yak.
The institute’s acting director, Dr P Chakravarty set the celebration in motion by hoisting the flag, which was followed by a meeting attended by officers from the district administration, personnel from paramilitary forces, the institute’s staff, public leaders, and other stakeholders.
Dr Chakravarty lauded the efforts of the institute’s staff in making great progress in yak research, and urged them to work sincerely to take the institute to newer heights.
The ITBP’s 4th Bn Commandant Mukesh Saraf lauded the institute’s work in such a remote location for the welfare of yaks and yak herdsmen. He highlighted the importance of yaks to the ITBP as pack animals, and thanked the institute for providing training to their personnel on yak handling and management.
Dirang CO Koj Yabyang expressed appreciation for “the different value addition of yak products” and emphasized on developing marketing strategies for these produces for the benefit of the yak herdsmen.
The meeting was followed by a cultural programme presented by the staffers of the institute.
