Union against temporary settlers participating in Arunachal Panchayat

ITANAGAR, Mar 22: Raising the concerns of the All Yobin Students’ Union (AYSU) on disallowing participation of non-locals in the Panchayati Raj System, the All Arunachal Pradesh Anti-Corruption Students’ Union (AAPACSU) reiterated the plight of the Yobin/Lisu tribe.
In a memorandum to the chief minister on Wednesday, the AAPACSU said that allowing temporary settlers to take part in Panchayat elections “is against the very spirit and intentions of the Panchayat laws, adding to the already marginalization problem faced by the Yobin tribe”.
It claimed that “after the creation of Vijoynagar Circle in 1962, the area witnessed forced settlement of 200 retired army personal and families in the already Yobin-inhabited village, which subsequently removed the people of Yobin tribe from their ancestral homes”.
The AAPACSU appealed to the authorities to fulfil its promise, made over a year ago, to rectify the earlier notification which would give the Yobin/Lisu tribe back the Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe status.
