ITANAGAR, Mar 23: The landline and internet services of BSNL have been badly hit due to the ongoing road expansion work in the Capital Complex for the past one month. According to the BSNL Deputy General Manager (DGM), Itanagar, Arung Siram, excavators, during road expansion work dig out and snap optical cables from the ground which have to be repaired later by the BSNL authorities. “There is no coordination from the work executing agency’s side, often the BSNL technicians have to repair the cables in a particular place twice as the excavators damage it repeatedly,” he stated.
Meanwhile, on March 22 last, one of the telecom technicians working under the Sub-Divisional Officer, BSNL, Itanagar, Shivji Ray had died while on duty.
The DGM said that Ray, a native of Dayalpur, Vaishali district, Bihar, was on night duty restoring cables near Civil Secretariat when a heap of boulder and sand fell on him. He was immediately shifted to RKM Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The staff and officials of the Sub-Divisional Officer, BSNL, Itanagar have meanwhile, deeply mourned Ray’s demise. He is survived by his wife, 3 daughters and a son.
Reportedly, Ray, along with three other technicians had been working to restore the damaged cables in that particular area as the excavators damaged it for the second time.
The BSNL authorities have informed that they had earlier appealed to the T.K. Engineering to coordinate with them to ensure that the optical cables running underneath the road could be prevented from damage but there has been no positive response from their end.
“The problem would be solved once the Highway expansion work agencies provide us a utility corridor so that we could proceed with our repair work without any hindrance but we have been sadly, not provided one so far”, the DGM informed.
When asked when the BSNL services will resume, Siram said, “keeping in view the ongoing road expansion work, it is difficult for me say when the BSNL internet service will resume. There are lot of places where cables are damaged, repair work is going on but at some places new cables will have to be laid out to ensure that internet service resumes”.
