ROING, Aug 6: Twenty-one packets of heroin, commonly known as brown sugar, were confiscated from a rented house here on Sunday morning in a raid conducted by the recently formed Anti-Drug Squad (ADS) of the police.
The ADS, comprising Inspector Abraham Taying, L/SI Subu Sunya and L/Ct N Bosai, raided the rented house of one Anita Das in Mayu-II, acting on information from the Mayu Women Group, which also assisted in the raid.
During the raid, a plastic packet containing the 21 paper-wrapped heroin weighing 7.20 grams was seized from Das’ possession. Apart from the substance, the ADS seized a cash amount of Rs 32,800 from her possession, which she confessed to have earned from selling drugs in the past two days.
The seizure was made in the presence of DSP Roing Opir Paron and town magistrate Sanjay Taram.
According to reports, the accused, who is reportedly in a live-in relationship with a local boy, has been running the racket on a large scale for the last few months, after her co-peddlers got arrested and were put behind bars.
Reportedly, she has also been using her scooter to make home delivery of drugs to abusers.
A criminal case under Section 22(b) of the NDPS Act has been registered against Das, and the case is under investigation.
Lower Dibang Valley SP Sanjay Kumar Sain lauded the ADS and the women group of Mayu for their efforts in checking and curtailing the drug menace. He reiterated that no drug peddler or abuser would be spared in the district, and urged the people to share NDPS related information with the police.
