Workshop on IPR conducted

ITANAGAR, Aug 7: A workshop on intellectual property rights (IPR) and geographical indication (GI) registration was organized at the Science Centre here on Tuesday by the Patent Information Centre (PIC) under the AP State Council for Science & Technology (APSCST).
Addressing the inaugural function, APSCST Director CD Mungyak highlighted the scope of IPR in the state.
“Arunachal Pradesh, being rich in natural resources and indigenous knowledge system, has vast scope in the field of IPR,” he said.
APSCST Joint Director Debajit Mahanta spoke on the objectives, scope and initiatives of the PIC. He urged the participants and institutions to come up with innovations in the field of IP which can be registered for patenting and GI from Arunachal Pradesh.
Guwahati-based Assam Science Technology and Environment Council scientist S Devnath delivered a lecture on introduction to GI and case studies of GI. The examiner of patent and design in the patent office in Kolkata, NK Singh, spoke on the GI Act & Rules of India and GI application drafting, filing and post activities.
APSCST scientist Topo Ronya spoke on the role of the PIC and its service delivery system. Deputy Director P Lombi also spoke.
Participants from different departments and institutions, besides students and NGO representatives attended the workshop.
It is pertinent to mention that only one brand from Arunachal Pradesh, Arunachal Orange (Wakro), has so far been registered for patent.
