ITANAGAR, Aug 10: World Biofuel Day was observed at the Donyi Polo Vidya Bhawan preparatory school here on Friday, under the auspices of the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL).
World Biofuel Day is observed by the petroleum & natural gas ministry every year on 10 August to create awareness on the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels, and to highlight the efforts made by the government in the biofuel sector.
IOCL Guwahati branch general manager (institution business) Jayanta Madhav informed the students about the impact of crude oil import on the Indian economy and the need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
Itanagar Sub-Divisional Food & Civil Supplies Officer Yumlam Achung urged the students to spread awareness on biofuel among their friends and relatives, and also the society at large.
NERIST mechanical engineering department HoD Pradeep Lingfa spoke on how to make students understand the various technical aspects of production and use of biofuel in the country, while Vidyamandir Itanagar director Arvind Sarma spoke about the chemical aspects of fossil fuel and biofuel, and advised the students to make their own efforts to reduce pollution and global warming.
IOCL state coordinator Satyakam Sarma highlighted the significance of Biofuel Day.
Various competitions were conducted among the students on the theme ‘World Biofuel Day’. Over 70 students participated in the competitions.
